Family outreach and reintegration into society will be two of the main services offered at the St. Kitts and Nevis Coed Rehabilitation Center, when it is opened in 2009.

The center is one component of Government’s Child Development Project (CDP) which seeks to improve the status of children at risk by supporting programmes of early detection and remediation of behavioural and learning difficulties as well as rehabilitative care for persons who have committed offenses.

Appearing on this week’s edition of the SKNIS radio magazine programme, Perspectives, Ian ‘Patches’ Liburd, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Social Development, noted that the new juvenile center will offer a second chance to young men and women.

“The rehabilitation center is designed to house 20 boys and 10 girls and will provide quality treatment and child development services including counseling,” Liburd said.

The center will be located at Harris’ Village and will be placed on a 3.1 acre lot. Funding for construction was secured from the Caribbean Development Bank at an approximate cost of $5.2 million. The work will be undertaken by Stephen and Associates Ltd. and is expected to be completed in one year. Read the rest of this entry »

The Ministry of Health was the recipient of a brand new garbage truck, which was funded by the St. Christopher and Nevis Social Security Board.

The keys to the US$142,000 (EC$384,000)  Mack truck, were handed over to Minister of Health in the Nevis Island Administration Hon. Hensley Daniel by Director of the St. Christopher and Nevis Social Security Board Mrs. Sephlin Lawrence. The brief but significant ceremony was held at the Low Ground Land fill on July 29, 2008.

Mr. Daniel said it was no surprise that Social Security engaged the Ministry of Health since its contributions came from workers.

“The Ministry of Health has an interest and a responsibility to ensure that workers are healthy so that when workers are healthy they will work and by working they will contribute to Social Security so this is in a way an investment in the workers of the country to ensure that they remain healthy because we want to make sure that garbage is properly disposed off and in addition to that they have an interest in the aesthetic beauty of the country.

“If the country is beautiful the visitors [will] come. The people who work in tourism they will get more work and they will contribute to Social Security. So I want to thank them for being in that philosophical mindset. This is not something that is Social Security over here and health over there but Social Security and Health are intertwined,” he said. Read the rest of this entry »

Minister of Agriculture in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) Hon. Robelto Hector, received high commendations from other officials for his instrumentality in the refurbishment of the Nevis Fishermen Marketing and Supply Cooperative Society Limited.

This came at the Cooperative’s opening ceremony on Tuesday July 29, 2008, under a tent setup for the occasion at Market Street in Charlestown.

Minister Hector, who spoke at the ceremony, recorded the NIA’s commitment to the fishing industry on Nevis.

“As a government, we are focused on increasing income of our fishermen.  We are determined to increase employment in the sector, so too we seek to achieve greater consistency of our fish supply and better quality.  We also seek to strengthen our export potential,” Minister Hector said.

The Minister also appealed to the fishermen and the general public, by extension, to offer support to the Cooperative and its efforts.

“As a sector directly related to the tourism product, we are committed to ensure that the correct synergy exists.  I call on you as food providers to rise to the challenge of ensuring that Nevisians are fed.  I call on you to continue to assist in ensuring our food security.  I must say to you fellow fishers, your trade represents one of the oldest professions.  It is a profession we are proud of and we want you to continue to feel that pride,” he said.
