The Ministry of Health through funding from the Pan Caribbean Partnership on HIV/AIDS and UNAIDS has assisted the Christian Council in organizing a workshop designed to sensitize faith-based marriage counselors on issues relevant to HIV/AIDS counseling.

President of the St. Kitts Christian Council, Rev Fr. Isaiah Phillip said his organisation felt that the three-day “Capacity Building for Pre-Marriage Counselors” workshop was necessary.  He said that this was because the earliest work that the faith-based organization did pertaining to HIV/AIDS in the mid 1980s revealed that often the issues pertaining to the pandemic, disease in general, and people’s response, depended on the connection with their faith.  As such, it was felt necessary to increase the information and understanding of the faith leaders in order to make as broad a Christian response as possible to the pandemic. November Is Youth Month In St. Kitts - Nevis

Basseterre, St. Kitts - Nevis
October 31, 2008 (SKNIS)

November is a special month for young people in St. Kitts and Nevis, and the Minister of State for Youth Affairs is encouraging all youth to achieve, excel and go the distance.

“This year, 2008, has been a year of great national achievement for this our tiny but proud Federation,” the Honourable Nigel Carty stated, in an address to declare Youth Month open. “… [Our] achievements [over the past 25 years] would not have been possible without the participation of our young people and … I am proud of those who continue to achieve in spite of all.”

Special mention was made of State Scholar, Agiel Browne and other students who wrote overseas examinations in pursuit of academic excellence as well as local athletes who represented the country as sports ambassadors. The local CARICOM and Commonwealth Youth Ambassadors, youth clubs and ordinary citizens trying to make a positive difference, were also commended by Minister Carty.

An invitation was issued for all to support the Youth Month activities that include a public lecture, youth awards ceremony, song festival and church service.

“You have the full support of the Government,” stressed the Minister. “The future continues to look promising [for] our young people and we shall continue to cherish our richest resource. Our young people!”

Meeting To Promote Respect & Understanding

Basseterre, St. Kitts - Nevis
October 31, 2008 (SKNIS)

Representatives from across the region will convene in St. Kitts - Nevis in November for a four-day conference designed to promote “respect and understanding.”

The “Consultative Meeting on Respect and Understanding for the Caribbean Region” will bring together key government and youth focal points, civil society representatives and others, to learn more about the Commonwealth’s respect and understanding agenda as it relates to young people.

Senior Youth Officer in the Department of Youth, Diane Francis told SKNIS that the forum is being organized in collaboration with the Commonwealth Youth Programme Caribbean Center (CYPCC).

“Delegates will basically work towards establishing a practical framework which will foster greater participation of young people in democracy and development in order to promote and maintain peaceful societies,” Francis noted. “We are excited to partner with the CYPCC and other stakeholders in hosting this event in St. Kitts and Nevis.”

The roundtable forum runs from November 18 to 21 and will be held at the Royal St. Kitts Hotel.
