“Nevis is strides closer to building an industry deep in the linkage between agriculture and tourism; and this is evident in the Nevis Module, which has been recognized and/or duplicated by countries world wide,” said Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Joseph Parry, in his brief remarks at a consultation on Monday, March 30, 2009 at the Old Manor Hotel.

The consultation exercise, an initiative of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), was convened under the OAS-funded project which links Tourism and Agriculture.

“Tourism and Agriculture linkages must be firmly established,” reiterated the Premier. He reminded the audience that the Nevis Module was conceived when a few hotels on Nevis expressed their willingness to buy locally grown food once they were assured that the produce would be readily available.  “The Department of Agriculture was able to rise to the challenge; and that set the pace for the rest of the region,” he said.

Meanwhile, similar consultation exercises have been implemented by IICA in seven countries around the region, namely– Barbados, Dominica, Guyana, Jamaica, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago and St Kitts and Nevis. The overall objective of the project is to promote increased linkages between tourism and agriculture that will create economic opportunities, build resilience in rural communities and enhance the sustainable development of both the tourism and agriculture industries.

Mr. Augustine Merchant, country representative for IICA, coordinated the meeting and stated that he will continue to strengthen the organization’s contributions through the agro-tourism program.

Mr. Starret Greene, Director and OAS representative in St. Kitts and Nevis, expressed his Organization’s satisfaction with the work done under the project and welcomed the opportunity for stakeholders to develop ideas on the way forward.

In re-emphasizing the importance of agriculture to our island, the Premier called on the young people to develop an interest in becoming farmers.  He stated that farming no longer has a negative stigma to it; and that through this one can be assured of lucrative self-employment. ”We need to demonstrate to the younger generation the positive aspects of farming by going to the schools, the community and by marketing farming in a way that it becomes a positive choice.”

He continued by stating that there is also a need to employ greater use of technology and scientific methods which can arouse curiosity in young people and stimulate their interest in the subject. “If we can achieve all of this we would achieve much,” he concluded.

In attendance at the workshop were many other persons from private and public entities involved or interested in agro-tourism ventures in Nevis.  From all reports, they, too, would have gained valuable insight from the experience.

NIA To Sign Agreement For Treatment In Amputation Prevention

Charlestown, Nevis
March 31, 2009

Diabetic patients on Nevis will have the opportunity to take advantage of a new medical corporation programme, for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers and amputation prevention, offered to St. Kitts and Nevis by Cuba.

Minister of Health in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) Hon. Hensley Daniel told the Department of Information recently, that the programme which was spearheaded by health officials in Cuba, was a programme tailored for the Caribbean which utilized a Cuban developed biotechnology product called Heberprot-P. The drug has had a proven success rate among patients in the Spanish Speaking Island.

Mr. Daniel said he had returned to Nevis with a draft agreement for the programme and it was the intention of the NIA to sign up for the medical cooperation plan shortly. The Minister outlined some basic terms of the proposed agreement for St. Kitts and Nevis which also made provisions for training.

“The Project is based on the integral attention of the diabetic patient with foot ulcers in St. Kitts and Nevis through the introduction and application of a novel Cuban biotech product Heberprot-P with proven efficacy in nearly 2,000 Cubans and foreign patients treated to date.

“The project foresees the training of the St. Kitts and Nevis health personnel in the assistance and [terms] to be defined, as well as all recommendations for the implementation of an organised system and the education for health personnel who contribute to the suitable handling of the project in the region,” he said

The Health Minister said that the programme would be of immense benefit to the people of Nevis, since there had not been any such programmes by the health services in the past.

“I believe persons who are diabetic in Nevis and St. Kitts and they learn that they can get treatment for an ulcer to prevent the continued [advancement] of the ulcer and amputation it must mean something very significant for the people, very significant,” he said.

Mr. Daniel along with Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health Mrs. Joslyn Liburd formed part of a Federal delegation to Cuba. He said they visited the Bio Technology Canter where the programme was implemented and were able to obtain first hand proof from patients there.

He explained that the product which was injected directly into the ulcer had generated healthy tissue and signs of healing were obvious in the first six weeks of treatment.

â€œThere were testimonies by people who came to the Centre, who had given up hope already and who did not expect their foot to be healed and this medication developed in Cuba was used to prevent amputation,” he said.

Meantime, Resident Cuban Ambassador to St. Kitts and Nevis Her Excellency Mrs. Ana Maria Gonzalez endorsed the programme and cited that doctors in her country had done much research in the area of diabetes.

She said the Caribbean had a high incidence of diabetic patients and the project which was offered to the Caribbean region was aimed at amputation prevention.
