Burnett International Medical School To Open In St. Kitts

Basseterre, St. Kitts - Nevis
April 29, 2009 (CUOPM)

A new medical school will be officially opened in St. Kitts on Saturday.

Burnett International University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, formerly located in Haiti, will begin classes with 28 students next month at the Bird Rock Commercial Complex, Chancellor, Rev. Burnett Moise, an alumni of Windsor University here in St. Kitts said Thursday.

He said St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister, Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas is among speakers at the official opening ceremony.

The medical school has relocated to St. Kitts due to the political instability in Haiti.

Rev. Moise’ wife, Dr. Carline St. Louis-Moise, is President. Both were educated in the United States and expressed a desire to establish the school in Haiti in answer to the need for training Doctors in Haiti in the English language, and the non-existence of a school of that type.

With the appointment of a local Board of Directors in September 2003, the University opened its doors in temporary facilities. On January 26, 2004, the University began instruction at JBE Complex in Tabarre, Haiti.

In April 2004, by action of the Board of Directors in conjunction with a group of doctors living in the USA, the University name was changed to Burnett International University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Since that time, Burnett International University School of Medicine and Health Sciences has been providing knowledge and training in the art of Medicine and Nursing Care.

In view of the political instability in Haiti, BIU decided to transfer its campus to St. Kitts. On October 22, 2007, the university was accredited by the Board of Accreditation of St. Kitts and Nevis.

Burnett International University School of Medicine and Health Sciences offers a unique opportunity to students who wish to pursue a M.D. degree. The curriculum of Burnett International University School of Medicine and Health Sciences is consistent with that offered in the United States.

It is designed to prepare the students for successful completion of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). This University runs a four-year graduate medical program for now, with the objective of providing training in other fields such as Dentistry, Nursing, Mental Health, Pharmacy, Optometry and Veterinary Schools. The Burnett International University School of Medicine and Health Sciences is proud to provide first-rate education. It hopes to become one of the largest private research universities in the Caribbean.

Early morning walkers will carve out a new route during the Prime Minister’s Monthly Health and Wellness Walk on Saturday.

Organisers say Saturday’s route will begin at the Pogson Medical Centre in Sandy Point and end in Dieppe Bay. Previous walks were from Saddlers to Newton Ground; Newton Ground to Saddler’s and the most recent from St. Paul’s to the Pogson Medical Centre.

The Prime Minister’s Monthly walk has attracted persons from around the islands.

The walk starts at 5:30 A.M. and the usual transportation will be provided from Saddlers to Sandy Point and return. Participants usually enjoy a healthy breakfast at the end of the walk.

The Health and Wellness Walk is aimed at introducing healthy lifestyles.

“You must exercise daily. Watch what you eat. High blood pressure and diabetes are preventable diseases in most cases. Be healthy,” has been the advice from Prime Minister Douglas, a medical doctor and CARICOM’s point man on Health matters.

The monthly walk organised Minister of Finance, Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris also takes place this Saturday from Belle Vue to the Hard Court in Ottley’s. It starts at 5:00 A.M.

United States Army Southern Command On Guard

Basseterre, St. Kitts - Nevis
April 30, 2009 (SKNIS)

The Ministry of National Security has commended the United States Army Southern Command for its continued assistance in helping the Caribbean and Central American Region prepare to manage disasters.

“At a time when the global community is confronting growing numbers of disaster related challenges, that will require multiagency collaboration … the work of USSOUTHCOM and participating states of FAHUM must be seen as critical to our own survival,” Permanent Secretary Astona Browne said on Wednesday.

“… Whatever form these disasters take, we must be prepared to respond effectively. That is why we welcome the coordinated approach adopted by USSOUTHCOM that complements our own national efforts as we endeavour to strengthen national and regional response mechanisms,” she added.

Mrs. Browne made the statement at the close of the two-day After Action Review workshop for the 2009 Allied Forces Humanitarian Programme (FAHUM). The event saw participants from the 25-member body, evaluate reports from disaster simulations staged earlier this year in Antigua, Grenada, Honduras and Costa Rica.

Scenarios included a tsunami; earthquake caused building collapse and a pandemic which started in South America and spread to Central America and the Caribbean.

“The critical processes and procedures that have been tested during the simulation exercises … have demonstrated once again that the region has the capacity to execute the proper response operations,” Mrs. Browne added. “We must be alert and commit to constantly review and improve our national plans, for it is the only method to strengthen our response and mitigate the challenges that plague us from time to time.”

FAHUM is held annually before the start of the hurricane season. Predictions for the 2009 hurricane season, which begins on June 1, forecast an active season with 12 named storms. Six are predicted to become hurricanes with two intense storms.
