Minister of Communications in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA), Hon. Carlisle Powell and General Manager of West Indies Power (WIP) Ltd, Mr. Rawlinson Isaac pitched their plan of selling a supply of geothermal energy produced in Nevis to the United States Virgin Islands (USVI). The presentation was broadcast live on Radio and Television in the USVI on Wednesday.

Appearing before the USVI Senate’s Economic Development, Energy and Technology Committee, Hon. Carlisle Powell and Mr. Rawlinson Isaac presented a detailed display and proposal of the geothermal power initiative ongoing on Nevis.

“The production of geothermal energy in Nevis is expected to be from mid- 2010 and WIP is expected to produce all of the electricity used on Nevis,” said Minister Powell. It was also stated by Mr. Isaac in his presentation that by 2014, underwater cables will be in place to transport a supply of geothermal energy to the U.S Virgin Islands from Nevis.

The Water and Power Authority (WAPA) in the USVI has begun exploring various renewable energy solutions that might be available to help the WAPA meet their demands. They are finalizing the process of selecting renewable energy contractors that will generate a portion of the electricity used by the islands.

Minister Powell told the Senators that the most realistic way of meeting their goal is by securing a reliable supply of clean, renewable geothermal energy which can be obtained from Nevis at a significantly less expensive rate.

“Studies have been done more than 10 years ago by the U.S Energy Department and the Organization of America States indicated that Nevis has the potential to produce 900 megawatts of electricity using geothermal power,” commented Mr. Powell.

Mr. Isaac in his presentation said that Nevis uses only about nine megawatts of power and therefore the West Indies Power hopes to sell the rest of what it produces to other Caribbean islands. He said he believes that Nevis can sell electricity to the Virgin Islands at an inexpensive rate and he encouraged the senators to take a close look at the proposal because the potential of geothermal is real.

Meanwhile, the first ever Eastern Caribbean Geothermal Conference is taking place on Nevis, June 30th – July 2nd 2009 at the Mount Nevis Hotel.  For more information please call Permanent Secretary in the Nevis Island Administration, Mr. Ernie Stapleton at 469 5521 ext. 2176.

Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Joseph Parry participated in the official closing ceremony of the Basic Electrical Wiring training course which took place on Wednesday at the Cotton Ground Ball field.

The Premier spoke to the young men who graduated and congratulated them on earning their certificates.  “You have made a great career choice.  I hope you young men are able to enjoy working in this area and assist other young men with the knowledge of electrical services,” Mr. Parry said.  “In the coming years, Nevis is going to need a large number of skilled tradesmen and women.  It is our (Nevis Reformation Party) vision to advance the island’s infrastructure.  It would be great for our own local trades people to do their part, to keep our economy growing and our island strong.”

The training program, which ran from May 6th - June 10th was facilitated by Pastor Euclid Lawrence, a native of Cotton Ground village, where the classes were held.

Mr. Lawrence said that as part of the training program, the fundamental electrical course provided an understanding of terminology, basic electrical theory and the responsibilities of working with electricity.

During the ceremony, Deputy Premier and Minister of Social Development, Hon. Hensley Daniel, presented the men with certificates and motivated them by saying that no matter what was in their past, they now have a chance to cut a new road. Mr. Daniel continued his motivation of the young men by stating that people with a trade are independent people, since no one can take that knowledge away from them.

Besides certificates, the participants also received tool kits and other essentials, compliments of TDC and the International Women of Commitment (IWOC) organization.

The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis has condemned the interim government in Honduras set up after the army bundled out President His Excellency Jose Manuel Zelaya Rosales.

“The Government strongly rejects and will not recognise any form of Government that has been unconstitutionally instituted,” a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

The statement said that St. Kitts and Nevis stands united with all Governments and Democratic Institutions in condemning this action and calls for the immediate and rightful re-institution of President Zelaya.

“This coup d’état in our view runs counter to the democratic principles which regulate good governance,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday condemned the ouster of the Honduran President and called for his immediate return to office.

The world body adopted a resolution by acclamation calling on all 192 UN member states not to recognize any government in Honduras other than Zelaya’s.

Zelaya, who addressed the General Assembly in New York on Tuesday afternoon after the resolution was adopted, thanked the UN for its “historic” action.

He said the resolution “expresses the indignation of the people of Honduras and people worldwide who continue to struggle for the only principles that can prevail in accordance with the United Nations charter.”

Zelaya was expelled from Honduras in a military coup over the weekend, but governments around the world have rallied around the leader and demanded his reinstatement.

The leftist Honduran billionaire-turned-politician has said he may try to return home on Thursday accompanied by the head of the Organization of American States.
