The St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Government’s tourism policy continues to reap dividends for the twin-island Federation with the announcement that British Airways is expected to bring 10,000 passengers to St. Kitts’ Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport by the end of the year and the numbers are expected to significantly increase in 2010.

This will be the highest number of visitors a weekly airline service has ever brought to St. Kitts over a 12-month period.

Minister of State, for Tourism, Sports & Culture, the Hon. Richard Skerritt said the BA arrival figures will surpass all expectations and the airline’s decision to begin operations to St. Kitts in these challenging market conditions, has proven to be a success.

This will be the largest number of visitors a weekly service has ever brought to St. Kitts over a 12-month period.

“We remain optimistic that passenger numbers will continue to increase well into 2010 as the travel business steadily regains momentum,” said Minister Skerritt in a statement released by the St. Kitts Tourism Authority.

According to advanced booking numbers, “we should reach the 10,000 BA passenger mark in December, and projections for 2010 are already looking promising.”

Minister Skerritt continued, “St. Kitts looks forward to being part of BA’s long-term Caribbean strategy and to continuing our special relationship.”

More than 10,000 passengers are expected to travel to St. Kitts from the UK during the first year since British Airways commenced operations in January 2009.

The figure will represent a 50 percent growth for the second half of 2009, after more than 4,000 passengers had travelled to St. Kitts on BA between January and June this year.

The growth in UK passenger numbers to St. Kitts is set to continue through 2010, following the start of BA’s second weekly service on 30 March 2010.

On the back of the new twice weekly BA service, the St. Kitts Tourism Authority has dedicated 2010 as ‘Celebrate St. Kitts’ year, to mark a programme of marketing and promotional initiatives, celebrating the key niche markets of Heritage, Culture, Sports and Cuisine.

The new mid week Tuesday flight will immediately increase capacity to St. Kitts while offering even greater flexibility to the duration of visitor nights.

British Airways will use a similar configuration to the existing Saturday flight with a three class, 280 seat Boeing 777 aircraft holding 40 Club World seats, 24 World Traveller Plus and 216 World Traveller seats.

News that British Airways is to add a second weekly flight into St. Kitts’ Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport has been welcomed by Leader of the Opposition in the Federal Assembly, the Hon. Mark Brantley.

“This is brilliant news for St. Kitts which continues to attract more and more airlift,” said the Nevisian-born Parliamentarian in a brief comment posted in the St. Kitts - Nevis List.

Federal Minister of State for Tourism, Sports and Culture, Sen. the Hon. Richard Skerritt recently said that the new British Airways flight starting in March next year offers welcome news, bringing hope and a ray of light to the island’s tourist industry.

He disclosed that British Airways brought in more than 4,000 passengers to St. Kitts during the first half of this year.

The second scheduled weekly flight from London’s Gatwick Airport into the Robert Bradshaw Airport will take off on Tuesday 23rd March 2010 and will immediately increase capacity to the St. Kitts and Nevis destination, while offering even greater flexibility to the duration of visitor nights.

Sen. Skerritt expressed delight that British Airways has had the confidence in the future growth of tourism in St. Kitts and Nevis to bring in two new flights in just 14 months. On January 10, 2009, the first scheduled British Airways service touched down to great fanfare.

“Flight To Bring Hope and Ray of Light…”

The new British Airways flight into St. Kitts’ Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport starting in March next year offers welcome news, bringing hope and a ray of light to the island’s tourist industry.

“It also puts us in an even stronger position than ever before as the reverberations of this announcement alone are immense - in addition to the immediate factors of increasing capacity and flexibility for our visitors, a second flight into St. Kitts will have major impact on everything we do moving forward - from developing new relationships with all our tourism partners that will certainly allow us even more possibilities for growth and providing an attractive environment for investors,” said Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, the Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas.

Speaking at a ceremony to officially launch the second British Airways service to St. Kitts at Club Twenty Four on Tuesday, Prime Minister told the event jointly hosted by the St. Kitts Tourism Authority and British Airways that since the January inaugural BA flight, British Airways and St.Kitts and Nevis have been able to develop a very strong partnership which is working to their mutual advantages.

“This is for us in the Federation, a solid partnership that is supporting us in our effects to increase tourist arrivals substantially from the UK and European markets and, more significantly, to help us maintain the upper market status of the destination. We owe you a debt of gratitude for your support as well as for the confidence that you have shown in St.Kitts and Nevis thus far,” said Prime Minister Douglas.

He told the British Airways officials, the UK travel media and trade partners  including tour operators, hoteliers and travel agents guests that St. kitts and Nevis recognized “that we are operating in a most volatile and highly challenging global economic environment, which has impacted the tourism industries of small countries like St. Kitts and Nevis in the most negative ways.”

“We continue to see declines in visitor’s number, we are witnessing unprecedented levels of discounting in prices for tourism products and services, and generally this crisis is affecting our bottom line in ways which we never imagined,” said Prime Minister Douglas, who noted however that “we in St.Kitts and Nevis made a pledge from the start of the crisis that we would rise up to those challenges - to meet them head on and to put key strategies in place which would help us maintain our unique position as a destination of choice and one which is firmly committed to a new period of sustained growth and development.”

Dr. Douglas said St. Kitts and Nevis believes that the twin-island destination can only succeed in this endeavour by working in smart partnerships like the one developed with British Airways and ensure that as partners there is a commitment to a long term lasting relationship.
