“The star of the Police is rising,” that was the sentiment echoed by Premier of Nevis, Hon. Joseph Parry when he gave brief remarks at the ground breaking ceremony for the Cotton Ground Police Station on Wednesday afternoon.

“The Nevis Island Administration remains fully committed to supporting the Police Force.  Evidence of this is emulated with the recent handing over of five Police vehicles, opening of police barracks in Butlers and the ground breaking of police barracks in Bath Plain,” commented Premier Parry.

The Nevis Reformation Party (NRP) Government acquired the Colquhoun Estate property, with plans for the Police Station one year ago. The existing police outpost had been relocated from a dilapidated building elsewhere in the village to the Ossie Guest House as a temporary measure since 2007.

According to Premier Parry the Government will outfit the new Police Station with the necessary resources to ensure that residents are well served.

The new facility when constructed will include features that were non-existent in the previous police station: work stations with computer access for offices, adequate sleeping quarters, a full kitchen and bathroom facilities.

The Cotton Ground police station will be one of three new modern facilities for officers stationed in the Nevis Police Division under the stewardship of the Hon. Joseph Parry and his Administration. New Police Barracks are under construction at Bath Plain and another was completed through the collaboration of the NIA and businessman Mr. Ken Evelyn, was recently handed over and commissioned in the village of Butlers.

“The completion of this new police Station will help the Police employ the most efficient use of the island’s resources and will enhance the effectiveness in responding  to the needs of the citizens of the St. Thomas’ area,” stated the Premier.

In conclusion, Hon. Joseph Parry stated that the completion of the new barracks and police stations for additional Police staff will position the Police to tackle law enforcement and public safety challenges of the 21st century.

Nevis To Add New Police Station In Cotton Ground

The symbolic ground breaking for the construction of a modern police station at Colquhoun Estate in Cotton Ground on Wednesday by Premier of Nevis and Minister responsible for Security Hon. Joseph Parry, was described by the Federation’s Commissioner of Police Austin Williams, as another step in the right direction in strengthening the police infrastructure on Nevis.

During his remarks at the event, Commissioner Williams said the new police facility, in addition to the recent commission of new police barracks at Butlers Village, the gift of a fleet of vehicles given to the police and the installation of a close circuit camera monitoring system, all made possible through the Nevis Island Administration (NIA), was evidence of the confidence the Administration had placed in the police and their work.

“These [gifts] I believe are more than tangible proof that the Government and in particular the Nevis Island Administration, recognises the needs of the police and are responding in kind.

“What we must take into consideration is that all these are coming at a time when we are experiencing an economic recession. Things are tight all over the world and so we are truly appreciative when the government can respond to our call, barring the competition for the scarce resources,” he said.

Mr. Williams referred to the occasion as an historic one, noting that the construction of new public buildings was not common let alone a police station.

Nonetheless, the Commissioner said the new police station which would be positioned along the Nevis Island Main Road at the entrance of Cotton Ground Village, would embrace the public.

“This new facility will surely have a place for the community where we can hold neighbourhood watch meetings, training and other special events for the public. This is going to be the community’s building and we would want the people to feel comfortable visiting us and using the facility.

“Public faith in the Police Department is continuing to grow and our image continues to improve. We have done our best to become more involved in this community and be more visible to our citizens. We have also tried to be as transparent as possible,” he said.

While he thanked the government for its approval of the project at this time and its tangible demonstration of faith and support for the work of the police, Mr. Williams noted that the new police station would enable the police organisation to grow as a department and become an improved agency.

During the ceremony, chaired by Cabinet Secretary in the NIA Mr. Ashley Farrell, students from the neighbouring St. Thomas’ Primary school rendered two heart warming performances – a skit and a poem – in honour of thethe Police.

St. Kitts and Nevis is stepping up the fight against crime following a meeting between top government officials and INTERPOL.

St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister, Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Hon. Sam Condor lead the Federation’s discussions with the Secretary General of INTERPOL, Mr. Ronald K. Noble.

“Our number 1 concern has always been ensuring that both citizens and visitors to St Kitts and Nevis be afforded the best possible security and assistance.  By according INTERPOL travel document holders special visa status, we are able to enhance our security by putting in place even closer links to INTERPOL and the support it provides,” said Prime Minister Douglas.

A variety of crime areas where INTERPOL could be of assistance in providing training were also identified during discussions with Prime Minister Douglas, the Honourable Sam Condor, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for National Security, Mrs. Astona Browne, Permanent Secretary for National Security, Dr. Norgen Wilson, Special Advisor on National Security, Mr. Austin Williams, Commissioner of Police and INTERPOL Secretary General Noble.

“Any country that needs support in police training or in international crime prevention and crime response can best do so by ensuring that it has a strong and vibrant relationship with INTERPOL,” said Noble, following long ranging talks.

Mr. Noble said that based on his discussions with Prime Minister Douglas and other high ranking St. Kitts and Nevis government officials, “I am persuaded that St. Kitts and Nevis is aware of the challenges confronting it and other countries in the region and is ready to take bold steps to confront these challenges.”

During the historic meeting with Prime Minister Douglas and Deputy Prime Minister Condor, it was agreed that the increasing transnational crime threats confronting the region required greater collaboration between INTERPOL and St. Kitts and Nevis.

“Toward that end, Prime Minister Douglas agreed to take immediate steps for his country to accord special visa status for INTERPOL travel document holders, thereby ensuring that the citizens of and visitors to St Kitts and Nevis would benefit from any needed international police support from INTERPOL without any unnecessary red tape,” said Noble.

INTERPOL’s presence and importance in the Caribbean Region has increased since the region hosted the 2007 Cricket World Cup and INTERPOL put in place a state of the art passport and passenger screening system.

The Caribbean Region now leads all INTERPOL regional bodies in terms of member country participation in the systematic screening of non-nationals seeking entry into the region.

During his first visit to St Kitts and Nevis, Secretary General Noble identified additional ways that the citizens of St Kitts and Nevis as well as citizens of the entire region could benefit from INTERPOL travel document holders having standard visa requirements waived in order for them upon request to respond more quickly to any needs of the country or region.
