Developers for the Charlestown Harbour Shopping Village Project, Namdar Brothers Realty Ltd. have confirmed their commitment to redevelop the Charlestown Waterfront. Premier of Nevis Hon. Joseph Parry announced in an interview with the Department of Information on Monday Morning, that according to a letter received from the St. Kitts based developers, the ground breaking for the project is earmarked for Tuesday, January 18th 2011.

Premier Parry said it was wonderful news and he is pleased that the Namdar Brothers Realty was committed to the redevelopment of downtown Charlestown. He also said that Mr. Aaron Karimzadeh, Managing Director of Namdar Brother Realty said they were hopeful that the project would become the touristic focal point of Nevis, for the benefit of both locals and tourists.

“The redevelopment of the Charlestown Waterfront is promised to be an up-market development that would be attractive to cruise and land based tourists.  The site would hold up to 25 or more stores, with a number of the shops selling brand name clothing, leather goods, duty free perfumes and restaurants,” said the Premier.

Based on the agreement that the Nevis Island Administration signed in October, 2009 with Namdar Brothers Reality, the lease will be for 25 years and the development of the Charlestown Waterfront will be constructed by local contractors.

The Premier noted that local workers will be employed to execute the bulk of the work on this major project, as the development project will be beneficial to the island of Nevis.

The Harbour Village will encompass an area south of the Charlestown Main Pier consisting of the customs building, the waterfront and the surrounding Charlestown Market.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in the Nevis Tourism Authority Mr. John Hanley disclosed that small and medium enterprises will have the opportunity to partake in the tourism pie during his tenure in office.

The new CEO, the first Nevisian to be appointed to that position told the Department of Information in an interview on Wednesday, that the tourism pie should be shared not just among the larger players in the tourism industry on Nevis but by everyone.

He also discussed immediate and long term plans in relation to the Authority’s marketing.

“Four Seasons will be opened on the 15th of December and on the same day American Eagle will resume its flights. That is absolutely great news and that means we will have a lot more air lift and greater connectivity to the island and that’s a tremendous boost. At the Tourism Authority we plan to begin our marketing efforts, we plan to upgrade our marketing efforts so that we can be ready in time to take full advantage of these two developments.

“After December 15th we plan to continue intensifying our marketing efforts. We want to get out the word that not because Four Seasons has been closed that Nevis is closed,” he said and added that tourism was doing quite well on Nevis and the Authority planned to develop that.

According to Mr. Hanley, The Authority also planned a tourism consultation which would provide feedback and ideas from stakeholders. He said the information gathered would be of benefit in the development of a strategic plan that would allow the benefits to tourism on Nevis to trickle down to everyone.

With regard to the tourism outlook for Nevis Mr. Hanley said these were tough financial times but the future did not appear bleak.

“At this point in time things are a little bit difficult financially but I think that when the Four Seasons reopens things are going to get a lot better. So once I have the financial support and the Administrative support I think we are going to move ahead in leaps and bounds in tourism in Nevis,” he said.

Notwithstanding, in response to his July 1st appointment to the executive position in the island’s key tourism promotion entity Mr. Hanley told the Department that he was excited about the appointment which brought with it an opportunity to effect positive change.

“I am also very proud to be the first Nevisian and when our local persons can assume these roles and make a positive impact on the tourism landscape of Nevis then that is something really to look forward to. All I can say is that I am going to give it my best shot and I am going to give it my best,” he said.

Meantime, Advisor to Tourism in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) Mr. Alistair Yearwood had much confidence in the new CEO

“I have to congratulate and welcome Mr. John Hanley, as of July 1st he has taken up the position of CEO of the Nevis Tourism Authority, a very important position in the whole tourism outlook of Nevis.

“He is the first Nevisian National to hold the post and I think that is appropriate and congratulations Mr. Hanley and welcome to the frontier of tourism on Nevis. I am sure it will be a very successful sojourn for you,” he said.

Premier of Nevis, Hon. Joseph Parry said he is pleased to announce that a new Chief Executive Officer to the Nevis Tourism Authority (NTA) is Mr. John W. Hanley, resident of Garricks Estate, Nevis.  The Premier made the statement on Tuesday, during his weekly radio program, “In Touch with the Premier.”

“This appointment is historic since the NTA will be headed by a Nevisian for the first time,” said the Premier.

Mr. Tyrone O’Flaherty, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism said in an interview that John Hanley is an excellent choice for the job of CEO of the NTA.

“He has the correct mix of dynamism and determination for success in a field that requires constant focus and a relentless pursuit of all things tourism.  These are the qualities that made him a key asset to the Ministry of Tourism.  We wish him all the best, secure in the knowledge that that is exactly what he will deliver to the NTA,” commented Mr. O’Flaherty.

Alastair Yearwood, Advisor to tourism in the Nevis Island Administration, stated that he is “confident that Mr. Hanley’s appointment will have a positive impact on the organization.”  He further explained that after an extensive search, the Board of the NTA identified Mr. John Hanley, a member of staff in the Ministry of Tourism, as a suitable candidate for the position of CEO of the Nevis Tourism Authority. The tourism advisor further stated, “This has not been a rushed decision. After a number of meetings, due consideration and consultation with Mr. Tyrone O’Flaherty, the appointment of Mr. Hanley was recommended to the Minister of Tourism, the Hon. Joseph Parry.  Mr. Parry accepted the recommendation and Mr. Hanley has been duly appointed as of the 1st July 2010.”

Chairman of the NTA board, Mr. Richard Lupinacci, said in response to the appointment, “It is very satisfying to find a talented Nevisian like John Hanley taking on such an important responsibility for our destination and its tourist industry. We are pleased he has chosen to become a part of promoting and marketing Nevis”.

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Hanley worked in the Research and Development Unit of the Ministry of Tourism in Nevis as the Policy and Regulations Officer.  He holds a Master of Science Degree (Cum Laude) in Tourism Management from IULM University in Milan, Italy, where he specialized in marketing, destination management and sustainable tourism.

Mr. Hanley was one of five candidates from the Caribbean who were recently awarded scholarships from the Municipality of Milan (Comune di Milano) in Northern Italy to pursue postgraduate degrees in tourism.  The other four awardees were from the Bahamas, Belize, Grenada and St. Lucia.

When asked what his thoughts on his new portfolio were, Mr. Hanley responded, “I think that this is a wonderful opportunity to effect positive change on the tourism landscape of Nevis.  The news of the re-opening of the Four Seasons and the resumption of direct American Eagle flights, both happening on December 15th 2010, is particularly welcome, not only for the island’s tourism and hospitality industry but for the entire Nevisian economy. We at the Nevis Tourism Authority will do our best to ensure that the multiplier effect of these developments trickles down to as many persons as possible.”
