St.Kitts - Nevis’ Main Opposition party the People’s Action Movement celebrates International Woman’s Day by highlighting the outstanding record of achievements by the party in the development and empowerment of the federation’s women.

“On the occasion of International Women’s Day it is fitting to remind ourselves and our country of the sterling contribution women have made to our history. Unfortunately the record is scant in reference to the struggles of our foremothers during enslavement because their contributions were under-recognized. We must pay tribute to those generations of anonymous women who fought to further the cause of freedom,” said People’s Action Movement Leader Lindsay Grant .

“Thankfully we are quickly making up for this neglect and are giving women the honour that is long overdue. In our post colonial history our women have been at the forefront of every aspect of building our federation,” Grant continued.

The People’s action Movement has a proud and distinguished record when it comes to the empowerment of women and supporting their aspirations. PAM was the first party in the Federation to put a woman on the ballot as a candidate in 1971, the stellar Mrs. Mary Charles – George. PAM was the first party to have a woman elected to parliament in 1984 in Lawyer  Constance  Viola Mitchum.

Under the leadership of Ms. Mitchum the legislative agenda of the government actively supported the rights and aspirations of women and to this day the only pieces of legislation passed specifically for the benefit and empowerment of women were tabled by the government of the People’s Action Movement. PAM secured the rights of mothers to retain their position in the civil service even if they were unmarried; PAM also introduced a 13 weeks maternity benefit with pay for women. PAM also introduced organized Early Childhood Education for very young children both improving the development of children and increasing the access of women to gainful employment.

The People’s Action Movement Leader said ,“It is clear that there is still much to do to ensure that our women can reach their fullest potential. Sexual and domestic violence and sexual harassment are still serious scourges in our society. Teenage motherhood and the subsequent segregation into low wage jobs still steal a vibrant future from too many girls. Our activism and struggle must continue because women’s rights are human rights and for this reason we salute the United Nations Fund for Women for its leadership in this area,”.

International Women’s Day (8 March) is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. We at the People’s Action Movement salute the valuable contriubutions of women in our Federation and around the world.

Attorney General To Represnt Douglas Regime

Basseterre, St. Kitts - Nevis

February 12, 2010

Mr. Lindsay Grant will again bring the illegitimate Douglas regime before the court with a lawsuit on behalf of three young Kittitians; Ms. Kimberley Ward, Mr. Joel Daniel and Mr. Kashief Daniel whose constitutional rights have been grossly violated.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning, February 7th, when the home of Mr. Kashief Daniel and Mr. Joel Daniel in Conaree was ransacked by members of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force under the pretext that they were searching for “drugs, guns and ammunition.” In reality they were sent with orders from the corridors of power on Church Street to confiscate the damning evidence that Ms. Ward, who was also there, had collected on Election Day of illegal voting in Half Way Tree before it makes its way into Court in the coming days.

In a letter to the Commissioner of Police and copied to the Prime Minister, the Minister of National Security and the Attourney General, Mr. Grant revealed the sordid details of an unconstitutional abuse of government power on innocent young people.  “The police officers were heavily armed and were brandishing their assault weaponry in the direction of my clients.

The said police officers then proceeded to wave what appeared to be a rolled-up piece of paper which they claimed to be a search warrant for guns, drugs and ammunition.  They refused repeated requests by my clients to allow them to examine the alleged search warrant.

The police officers involved did not find any guns, drugs or ammunition, for the simple reason that none were there.  However, this did not deter the police officers from seizing and taking into their custody the totally unrelated laptop of my client, Ms. Kimberly Ward, cellular phones of all three (3) of my clients, and the camera and DVD player of my client, Mr. Joel Daniel.

In a sordid display of brute force and unjustifiable power, my clients, Mr. Joel Daniel and Mr. Kashief Daniel (the latter of whom is a mere 18 years of age), were handcuffed for no reason, as if they were common criminals.  All three (3) of my clients were taken into custody and taken to the Frigate Bay outpost of the police force, where they were denied their liberty.”

Up till now no warrant has been produced for this search in violation of s 9 (1) of the Constitution which states “Except with his own consent, a person shall not be subject to the search of his person or his property or the entry by others on his premises,” except (2) d “the search of any person or property by order of a court or entry upon any premises by such an order.”

Prime Minister Douglas knows that his days of rule are numbered and he is desperately trying to delay the inevitable but time is longer than twine. Like a cornered animal he is resorting to crude terrorism against innocent citizens but this will not be tolerated.

The Douglas regime will pay not only costs but significant compensation to these young people when the final judgment of the court is read. Every citizen will be vindicated by that judgment. It is time for change.

I never thought that I could feel so uplifted after being told that I had unfairly lost and election for the second time in constituency #4 but when I saw the outpouring of support and energy in Cayon I was greatly moved by the confidence of the members, friends and supporters of the People’s Action Movement.

I am especially proud of our people in Half Way Tree who were at ground zero in the desperate campaign of Dr. Denzil Douglas to save his own skin with diplomatic immunity for a further five years. He will not succeed. Just like you I cannot see my country dying and refuse to lend a helping hand. I am pleased to personally inform you that the papers in the election petition will be filed by early next week and the fraudulent decision will be overturned. Dr. Denzil Douglas will then have a minority government and we can all remember what he said about that in 1993. This will be one time that we will take him at his word.

I wish to congratulate the Hon. Shawn Richards and the Hon. Eugene Hamilton for their resounding defeat of the corrupt Labour electoral machinery. I wish to especially commend Eugene for standing firm through being the victim of physical violence from which he is still suffering, violence against his office and severe violence against his reputation. Eugene has really done us proud. The Hon. Shawn Richards as well has served the entire Federation well over the last five years as sometimes the only voice in parliament who stood up to Dr. Douglas and we are proud of him for that. The people of Sandy Point, Conaree, Cayon, St. Peters and environs were extraordinarily vigilant and strenuously defended their democracy. They are an inspiration all of us. I look forward to fighting with you all in the next phase of this battle as we bring this campaign to victory to its rightful conclusion. The Change will come.
