Premier of Nevis, Hon. Joseph Parry returned to Nevis this week from Barbados, where he met with St. Kitts/Nevis students who are attending the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus. The meeting was one of several engagements during his visit to Barbados, among them a television interview with Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) and an interview with well-known Barbadian radio host, Mr. David Ellis.

Premier Parry discussed with the students his days at the Cave Hill campus, where he studied Economics.  He also held in-depth discussions on Politics, Geothermal energy and Education.

The students asked a number of questions and registered their concerns on matters which included Secession, Crime Prevention and their ambitions for the future.

During the meeting, one student from St. Kitts commented on his observation of the Nevis Reformation Party (NRP)-led Government’s practice of assisting Nevisian students who sought higher education.

“I commend your government for making it possible for a large ratio of Nevisian students to be able to receive higher education; no matter what their backgrounds are,” he said.

The Premier smiled at the young man’s comment and concluded the meeting by stating, “The way for upward mobility for most, is through education. So in order for Nevis to go forward there must be an educated population and that is the mission of my Government.”

Youth Month - St. Kitts - Nevis

“We are proud students…”

Basseterre, St. Kitts - Nevis

November’s commemoration of Youth Month was hailed a success by the Director of Youth, Geoffrey Hanley, who said there is much to learn from the performance of the Washington Archibald High School, which won two competitions.

The school was adjudged the best in the first annual Clash of the High School talent competition held on November 28. One week later, students showed their skills in another field, cooking.

“Well, not surprisingly, the Washington Archibald High School is the winner of the Youth Department’s High School Cook-Off,” a very confident Juliana Joseph said flanked by her teammate Kellian Kelly. “We are proud students,” Joseph stressed, “Yeah,” Kelly shouted in agreement.

Director Hanley commended all participating schools and congratulated the winners on this week’s edition of SKNIS Perspectives.

“Whenever the Washington Archibald High School is involved in anything, the teachers get involved, the students get involved and they really turn it into a celebration,” he said, referring to the excitement and energy that goes into the preparations.

The youth director noted that on occasions when the school loses a contest the students maintain a positive attitude and vow to perform better the next time. He said that this spirit has been a key factor in the success of the educational institution.

“Once you encourage our young people, you’ll be surprised to know what they will be able to achieve,” he stressed. “We have to be very, very careful of the words that we use sometimes to our young people.”

Mr. Hanley explained that the culinary competition was welcomed with open arms by the schools and he was impressed that so many boys took part. In fact, the four participating schools were represented by five males and three females in total.

The students learned teamwork and had to call on their imagination and creativity as they were not told of what ingredients they were using until the start of the contest. Director Hanley said his Department was prepared to enhance the cook off competition in the future in order to ensure interested individuals are positively engaged in desirable activities.

“We must seize this opportunity….”

Basseterre, St. Kitts - Nevis
November 12, 2009 (SKNIS)

The importance of developing an education system that equips individuals with the knowledge and skills to enjoy the benefits of a globalised world was stressed at the official opening of the Saddlers Secondary School on Wednesday.

Senior Government officials, including the Prime Minister, Honourable Dr. Denzil Douglas, and members of the diplomatic corps joined parents, teachers, students and proud community residents in celebrating what Deputy Prime Minister, Honourable Sam Condor described as a “landmark occasion.”

“Indeed the building itself is a landmark for it is the first purpose built school of our region,” he said. “As such, it stands as a testament to the pioneering spirit of a people who are always willing to take the lead in a quest for fresh thinking and educational innovation. It is my prayer, and I verily believe that this spirit of exploration and innovation will be engendered in the students who will study within these walls, and who will in turn form the fabric of our future academia.”

Minister Condor, who holds responsibility for education, said the new school which makes use of the latest technologies for the classroom, is a “quantum leap” in Government’s promise to bring about an educational revolution in St. Kitts and Nevis.

“When I say there is no greater social injustice, than to deprive a child of a good occupation, I mean it absolutely literally,” he explained. “But I believe that it is fair to say that now it is well understood that a world class education system is the indispensable condition for creating a fair, and prosperous society for this and the centuries to come.”

“We must seize this opportunity to create this world class system now,” he stressed.

Deputy Prime Minister Condor stated that this meant creating schools with standards that matched and exceeded the best regionally and internationally, as well as eliminating the tale of non-achievers, thereby ensuring that school leavers had the necessary skills and academic requirements. He added that equipping students with virtues and compassion are also a must.

Prime Minister Douglas told the audience that it was a priority of his Government to have this school constructed. He emphasized that in spite of the global economic challenges, he would gladly approve the $ 11.7 million price tag to build the modern educational institution if he had to do it again.

The Prime Minister noted that Government will continue to work on transforming and modernizing the education sector.

He also cited the numerous University scholarship arrangements, which Government negotiated and thanked the Governments of Taiwan and Cuba for being dependable partners in this regard, along with the University of the West Indies, University of the Virgin Islands and the University of Puerto Rico.

The prime minister added that success was also dependent on parents/guardians supporting their children, and teachers using tools to capture the student’s imagination, while guiding them to realize their potential. He encouraged civic organizations to improve community outreach to help shape positive attitudes and behaviour.
