In preparation for the hosting of the women’s preliminary round matches of the ICC WT20 WEST INDIES 2010 cricket tournament, the players’ facilities at Warner Park have been upgraded.

Cricket Operations officer-St Kitts, Mr. Steve Saunders explained, “Due to the fact that Warner Park would be staging two matches per day from May 5-10, two additional dressing rooms have been constructed to accommodate teams playing the second game of the day”.

He also stated that the improved facilities which are located in the Pam Tyson Netball Complex would be outfitted to meet the requirement of international standards. This development has the potential to guarantee the staging of more Twenty20 competitions at Warner Park which was improved by the Government of St Kitts and Nevis in order to host Cricket World Cup 2007.

The construction was undertaken by HYPE WORKS which is an upcoming small business owned by Butch Morris of Cayon.  He expressed his gratitude for the ICC venue office in St. Kitts, in affording him the opportunity to expand his image as a small business owner and showcase his capabilities in the construction fraternity.

Mr. Morris revealed his satisfaction with the work that has been done so far in connection with the upgraded facilities, and looks forward to celebrating the success of the tournament when it bowls off in St. Kitts on May 5.

The women’s first round matches to be staged in St Kitts, include teams from Sri Lanka, Pakistan, India, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, West Indies, and world champs England.  All tickets will be complimentary, giving the fans an opportunity to see the highest caliber of women’s cricket.

Getting a new home for the sport of basketball, ensuring student athletes are developed holistically, getting more of Government services online and strengthening youth empowerment programmes were among priorities laid out by the Honourable Glenn Phillip, on Tuesday.

The new Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports, Information Technology, Telecommunications and Posts noted such, as this week’s guest on “The New Faces of Cabinet” miniseries which is running on the SKNIS radio programme Perspectives.

He explained that all of the major sports in St. Kitts have an internationally certified stadium and it is time that basketball had a new home.

“We spoke about that on the campaign trail – of basketball getting (its) own indoor facility and that is a priority of this Ministry at this time,” Minister Phillip stressed, adding that plans are also being reviewed to upgrade various facilities around the island.

“In terms of sports tourism … that is one of the major thrusts why we are looking at an indoor facility also,” the Minister revealed, outlining plans to attract U.S.-based professional and collegiate teams.

Highlighting the linkages between youth and sport development, the senior Government official stated that while additional tools will be made available for athletes to advance on the field of play, measures to ensure success in the classroom and in society will be reinforced.

Meanwhile, Minister Phillip said that efforts will continue to place various Government services online. A major step in this initiative occurred recently when hospital records at the Joseph N. France were computerized to allow efficient reviewing of a patient’s medical history and billing records by relevant staff.

He forecasted future online upgrades. “If you are a 60-year-old living in the rural area and you need something like a wire transfer … you can get it done right there in a post office in whatever district you live in,” he said, noting other aspects such as downloading passport forms and accessing birth certificates.

“… We are trying to transfer all these different paperwork into a database so it is accessible to persons within the public.”

Minister Phillip praised the role the Youth Empowerment through Skills (YES) Project has had in equipping hundreds of young persons with social, technical and professional skills and assured that progammes such as these, which involve partnering between the public and private sector, will be strengthened to cater for increases in the demand for training.

The YES Project was designed to ultimately empower young people in starting their own business and one individual on the streets of Basseterre told SKNIS that Minister Phillip could cement a legacy in this area.

“I think one of the areas he needs to look very closely at is youth development in business. Youth in business needs to be one of the places we should place priority on and so the Development Bank, through loans, may have to start looking towards youth development in business, and also training for youth in business and entrepreneurship…”

Other suggestions posed to the Minister included reviewing telecommunication rates and facilitating greater youth participation in governance as well as to work with local sporting associations to ensure athletes are covered by medical insurance should they be injured on the field.

The positives of playing sports at an early age to promote physical activity, develop discipline and team working skills as well as to reduce negative influences were shared with teachers in St. Kitts as part of the local Game On! Youth Sports! initiative.

Representatives from the Saddlers, Convent, Dr. William Connor, Bronte Welsh and Beach Allen primary schools as well as the Department of Youth were exposed to the message at a recent three-day workshop. They were joined by officers from the Department of Sports for the training which introduced teaching methods for fundamental techniques of running, catching, walking and other motor skills for young children.

Director of Sports, Dave Connor, told SKNIS that the workshop was very successful. He noted that the participants, which also included six members from the Youth Empowerment through Skills (YES) project, were enthused by the lessons designed to make youth sports fun while enhancing the prospects of producing future athletes.

Last week, the five teachers and the youth representative were presented with a large duffel bag of sports equipment. These included 3 kiddy cricket sets, 6 soccer balls, 8 hoops, 8 cones, 13 jump ropes, 11 bean bags, 13 tennis balls, 4 volley balls, 3 racquet ball sets and 3 baseball sets.

While presenting the equipment, Mr. Connor stressed that more active children will lead to a healthier lifestyle as they continue to grow. This would then result in a drop in the number of cases of common non communicable diseases such as hypertension and obesity.

Julian Philbert of the Dr. William Connor primary school thanked the Department of Sports for organizing the workshop which he described as practical and interactive. He stated that he and his colleagues understood the value of physical education and were committed to using the donated gear to enhance the experience for the children.

The Game On! Youth Sports! programme is modeled after that of the National Alliance for Youth Sports (NAYS). St. Kitts and Nevis has a close association with the Florida-based organization which has donated sporting gear and equipment in support of the local venture in the past.
